Love Atte Ka Halwa but cannot eat it because it is not gluten free? Try Jowar Halwa, an equally tasty alternative made of sorghum flour.

We at TVK are wrapping up #IndependenceDayWeek with another quintessential Indian dish – but with a twist!

I know how tasty Atte Ka Halwa is and how difficult it can be to give it up because wheat flour contains gluten. That’s why we are bringing you a gluten-free alternative that is equally tasty (and equally unhealthy!) Made with sorghum flour (jowar atta), sugar, milk and ghee, it will give you all the taste of Atte Ka Halwa without the nasty gluten.

Be prepared to work for it, though, as this dish requires a lot of elbow grease. But the result will definitely be worth it, we promise!

Jowar (Sorghum) Halwa recipe (Gluten free)
Serves 3

Ingredients:
1 cup sorghum flour (jowar atta)
1/2 cup ghee
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups milk
25 cashews
25 raisins
1 ripe banana, mashed

Method:
Heat ghee in a large pan on a low flame. Fry the cashews and raisins separately and set aside.

In the same pan, in the remaining ghee, roast the sorghum flour (jowar atta) for 7-8 minutes. Switch off the flame and mix in the milk 1/2 cup at a time till the flour is a thick mixture with no lumps.

Mix in the mashed banana.

Switch on the stove. Add sugar to the mixture and cook on a low flame for 8-10 minutes, stirring continuously, till it becomes thick again.

Transfer to a serving bowl. Add the cashews and raisins.

Serve hot.
