What’s in a shape? A lot, indeed!

We can find dishes shaped like a semicircle in cultures across the world

In our previous series, we focused on how a certain method is common across the cultures. This time around, we are looking at shape. Did you know that cultures across the world have dishes that are in the shape of a semicircle? Some of them are sweet, some of them are savoury but their basic shape remains the same.

This week, we are looking at three such dishes from Asia, Europe and South America.

First, we’ll bring to you a recipe for the Indian sweet dish, Gujiya. It is also called Karanji, Somas, Kajjikaya or Karjikayi, depending on which part of India you are eating it in. Filled with a sweet coconut mixture, it oozes delicious flavour.

Next, we have Calzones. Italians will tell you that a Calzone is basically a pizza in a pocket. While you can have a variety of fillings in your Calzone, we’ve stuck to the basic concept and filled our Calzone with pizza toppings. The best part? We made the Calzone vegan!

Lastly, we have Empanadas from South America. These are usually made with all-purpose flour but we went ahead and tried a gluten-free version of Empanadas that’s typical to Ecuador.

What are you waiting for? Give these recipes a go!
