The Vegetarians’ Kitchen is back with a bang on our second birthday!
It’s been two years since we launched this website. Honestly, the last year was tough and it wasn’t possible for us to post new recipes. But thanks to all of you who supported us on social media, we are back on our second birthday.
We are kicking off our return with three exciting new recipes: Kuru Fasulye (vegan) from Turkey, Baião de Dois (vegetarian) from Brazil, and Rajma Chawal (vegetarian) from India. What do they have in common, do you ask? All of them are variations of the basic rice and beans.
As we had revealed last year, this website began as an attempt to showcase the similarities among various cultures through the lens of food. We at TVK have always been firm believers that we are citizens of the world and we must respect other cultures irrespective of whether we agree with the practices or not, whether we understand them or not.
The #Swedengate scandal on Twitter was the perfect example of that philosophy. In tweet after tweet, people from all over the world explained how their cultural practices are completely opposite of the Swedish one which triggered #Swedengate.
“So Swedes (allegedly) don’t feed guests? Well, we do! I am from <insert country> and we always feed people who come to our home.”
That was pretty much the essence of every response from people in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and even other parts of Europe. Heck, even Swedes wrote in to say “not all Swedes”. The best part of #Swedengate was how it showed all of us reading the responses that we are the same when it comes to core values and the way we practice them in our cultures.
This is the foundation of TVK and we’ll continue to use our platform to focus on everything that unites us as lovers of food.
