The Vegetarians’ Kitchen

And we are back!

It’s been a tough year but we are back in time to celebrate our second birthday! A big thank you to all of you who have supported us throughout our journey, but especially in the last year. We are back, reinvigorated and ready to take a deeper look into our core values and philosophy.

Happy birthday to us!

The Vegetarians’ Kitchen turns one year old today and what a journey it has been! I started the site because I was inspired by how people from across the world were coming together to support each other during a pandemic. But do we really need a pandemic to be able to look beyond our superficial differences and find the things that we share in common? How about we accept that all of us simply love bread?

Lovin’ us some tomatoes!

What’s red, round and beloved by all? That’s right, tomatoes! Did you know that tomatoes originally grew in South America? The Spanish came across this plant when they attacked the Aztec Empire. They took it to Europe from where travellers and colonisers took it to other parts of the world. This week, we look at three tomato dishes from across cultures.

What’s in a shape? A lot, indeed!

Did you know that cultures across the world have dishes that are in the shape of a semicircle? Some of them are sweet, some of them are savoury but their basic shape remains the same.
This week, we are looking at three such dishes from Asia, Europe and South America.

The method in this delicious madness

When it comes to our love for stuffed dishes, no boundaries can divide us. In the past few weeks, we have focused on our love for certain ingredients that brings people from across the world together. This time, however, we decided to take a slight detour and look at method instead.

We love potatoes! Don’t you?

Give us potatoes in any form – boiled, steamed, fried – and we at TVK will devour it. Turns out, practically every culture has a potato dish they love – be it mashed potatoes, French fries or stuffed potatoes. Since we went completely Indian last week – due to Independence Day – we decided to go completely global this week and we chose the humble potato as our inspiration.

Independence Day is almost here. Time to celebrate!

Saturday, August 15, marks India’s Independence Day. This is The Vegetarian Kitchen’s first I-Day celebrations and we are doing it with style! This week, we are going completely Indian and focusing on foods that will honour our country and our national flag. We are releasing three recipes…

Rice! How I love thee! Let me count the ways!

When I went gluten free, I switched to rice and it opened up my palate to a world of delicious flavours. I suddenly realised that having been raised in a South Indian household, I had actually inherited a love for rice to which my explorations into other wheat-based dishes had blinded me. To celebrate this epiphany, I decided that all the recipes I publish this week will have rice…

Did you know this about Italian pizza?

The pizza in Italy is quite different from the ones you get in America. And you’ll hardly ever get a stuffed crust pizza in Italy. See, traditionally there was a reason why crusts in pizzas did not have any stuffing – they are meant to be plain. The contrast will mellow the flavours from the centre of the pizza and enhance…
